Elizabeth Ellen "Ella" Hough lived in Carrollton, Illinois, which is about 1.5 hours from St. Louis, Missouri. Ella attended art school at Washington University from 1888-1890. The Elizabeth Ellen Hough Papers consists of three sketchbooks from her studies at Washington University, circa 1888-1890. Also included are two cabinet card photographs of Hough, lithography pen nibs used by Hough, and a family history book written by Phyllis Wheeler.

This collection contains Washington University yearbooks from 1903 through 2011. The first Washington University yearbook was given the title “The Hatchet” in reference to the story of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree. The content of yearbooks varies widely from year to year, including student listings and photographs, activities, events, and athletic information. 

The majority of the publications in the Office of Student Affairs Collection concern new student orientation, parents orientation, and parents weekend.  Other student services included in this collection are the Campus Store, Dining Services, and Student Health Services. This collection also includes publications regarding career counseling services.

This collection contains newsletters, magazines, journals, and other publications produced by various student groups, both general interest groups, as well as those associated with campus wide associations such as Greek Life, Campus Residence Halls (Residential Life), and the Campus Y.

With the increasing use of the telephone, the University began publishing a phone directory in 1920 which lists students, faculty, and staff with their contact information. Various issues also include marital status, home address, and academic year/program. From 1854-1919, a roster of student names and addresses was printed in the Annual Course Bulletin (Catalogue).

Course catalogs were first published in 1857. Schools and departments publish course catalogs as the official description of the courses, degree requirements, and general program descriptions. The catalogs also list faculty members, and until 1923, a roster of students enrolled in classes.
