William and Gertrude Bernoudy Collection

This William and Gertrude Bernoudy Collection contains materials related to the personal and professional lives of William and Gertrude Bernoudy. William Adair Bernoudy was an architect who primarily designed residential homes in the St. Louis area, though his practice expanded to commercial buildings and design projects throughout the United States. This bulk of the collection consists of residential and commercial project records, namely architectural drawings, construction bids, agreements, and client correspondence. A selection of Bernoudy's architectural drawings was captured on microfilm. Also included are materials related to: William's iron and art glass panel designs; the Taliesin Fellowship, where William studied architecture under Frank Lloyd Wright; the Bernoudy family, including William's parents' personal diaries and datebooks; the Turnovský family, including papers documenting the experiences of Gertrude and her family during World War II; correspondence of both William and Gertrude throughout their lifetimes, including letters exchanged with notable figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Frederick Zimmerman, and Vincent Price; photographs showing the lives of the Bernoudys, including their vacations, exhibitions featuring William’s career, and more; publications collected by the Bernoudys, including magazine issues featuring architectural articles and books from their personal library.

Records were created primarily in St. Louis, Missouri, though locations span throughout the United States and abroad, specifically Prague, where the Turnovský family lived. The bulk of materials in this collection were created between 1910 and 1993.
