Gerald Early Collection
This collection consists of materials Gerald Early accumulated over the years for use in his scholarly research and teaching. The collected periodicals, books, and comics all inform aspects of American comic history and culture. The comic books span from 1950-2000 and include early war comics, superheroes, comix, and other genres that embodied Early’s interests.
Gerald Early is the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters in the Department of English and professor in the African and African American Studies Department at Washington University in St. Louis, where he has taught since 1982. He is currently the chair of the African and African American Studies Department, a position he held previously from 1992-1999. He has also served as the director of the American Culture Studies Program, and was the founding director of the Center for the Humanities
